Scenes from an
Imagined Life
for Full Orchestra
Program Notes
Scenes from an Imagined Life explores the idea of identity through fantasy and imagination. A single melodic idea is heard through all four movements, changing with each scene as if one person were living different lives. Every movement offers a glimpse into a different world, sometimes bold and courageous, sometimes reflective and peaceful, yet all are connected by the same inner voice.
The first movement, “Swashbuckler’s Dance,” sets the stage with suspenseful energy as it captures the essence of adventure and the poise of a duelist. Moments of fearless pursuit and flowing maneuvers unfold, rising and falling like the ebb and flow of a spirited dance. Bold yet refined, it portrays a pirate whose courage is matched by charm and grace—a hero who faces danger with style and finesse.
The second movement, “Waltz of the Midnight Masquerade,” invites the audience into a mysterious and elegant gathering. As the dance unfolds, a unique collection of characters emerges, each with its own personality, mood, and story, yet all connected by a shared, underlying melodic theme. Some are playful and joyful, while others are striking and bold. Together, they create a lively ensemble, each contributing to the unfolding drama of the masquerade.
The third movement, “Where the Air is Still,” offers a quiet pause in the journey, a moment where time seems to slow and the world grows calm. It unfolds like a lullaby, with a solo clarinet guiding the melody, creating feelings of nostalgia and comfort. The music floats gently, allowing the sense of stillness to settle in. The familiar underlying theme connects this moment to the rest of the work, a gentle reminder that memorable moments do not always have to be high-energy and dramatic.
The fourth movement, “Chasing the Horizon,” begins with a powerful stomp, signaling the beginning of the chase. The familiar melody from earlier in the work transforms into a short, repeating motive, driving the movement forward. Sliding notes and glissandi give the music a lively, folk-like charm, enhancing its sense of motion and excitement. It carries a sense of determination and optimism until the horizon is reached and a clear arrival brings the adventure to a satisfying conclusion.
